Art Club

The FLC Art Education Program encourages an awareness of the elements and principles of design, creative independence, as well as developing an awareness and exposure to a wide range of artistic media. Students’ creativity is enhanced through the exploration of chalk, paint, clay, wool, yarn, metal, and paper pulp. A variety of curriculums are incorporated into the multi-sensory lessons, helping students gain competence in Math, Science, and Reading through Art. Adaptive tools such as communication devices, IPads, reformed scissors, as well as modified drawing and painting materials are consistently provided to assist students in making independent choices and to create with freedom.

Students’ artwork is proudly displayed throughout the school and community. Large scale paintings, designed and executed by FLC students are on permanent exhibition in the Pediatric Unit of the Chambersburg Hospital. The paintings provide soothing, colorful, and childlike images to patients. Student artwork is also shown throughout the FLC hallways, Sensory Garden, Auditorium, and Media Center to exhibit the abilities and artistic achievements created by our students.

Art Club is offered to Secondary Emotional Support and Life Skills Students. Participants meet weekly to collaborate on community-connected Art projects, design backdrops and decorations for Franklin Learning Center events, create independent art assignments, and handcraft clay ornaments for our annual “Holiday Fundraiser.” The earned funds are used to support yearly Art Club field trips. In the past, our ornament sales have supported outings to the Washington County Art Museum, Downtown Chambersburg’s Ice Fest, and Michael Fisher’s Glass Blowing Studio in Biglerville, PA.
