Program Overview
We can help with the following:
- School enrollment/placement
- Agency referrals (clothing, food, shelter)
- Tracking/transferring school records
- Accessing educational programs
- Interagency problem-solving
- Increasing public awareness of homelessness
- Consultative phone calls to answer school, agency and shelter questions
- Training and education
- Outreach visits
- School supplies/clothing
Our goal
- Ensure that all children and youth experiencing homelessness enroll, participate, and have the opportunity to succeed in school
- Ensure children and youth experiencing homelessness receive a free and appropriate public education on an equal basis
- Eliminate and/or reduce educational barriers through the use of local “best practices” and the authorized activities of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act
- Reduce the disruption in the educational lives of children and youth experiencing homelessness
- Increase awareness about the nature and extent of the problems children and youth experiencing homelessness have enrolling in and gaining access to educational programs
- Explain and build on the laws and policies already in place, which overcome these barriers
Student's Rights
- The right to immediate enrollment in school, even if lacking paperwork normally required
- The right to attend school in his/her school of origin (if this is requested by the parent and is feasible) or in the school in the attendance area where the family or youth is currently residing
- The right to receive transportation to his/her school of origin, if this is requested by the
- parent
- The right to services comparable to those
- received by housed schoolmates, including transportation and supplemental educational services
- The right to attend school along with children not experiencing homelessness. Segregation based on a student’s status as homeless is strictly prohibited
